What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, also known as varicose veins, is a condition in which the veins around the anus, or in the anal canal, become swollen when stretched under pressure. Hemorrhoids are probably the most common cause of visible blood in the digestive tract, especially blood that appears bright red. They are not dangerous, although they can be very annoying and painful.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are caused by pressure in the rectal veins from standing upright, sitting for long periods, and by poor bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, and straining at stool. Also pregnancy is a known cause due to the pressure it puts on the bowels.

What are the common symptoms?

Pain, itching, and bleeding are common symptoms. Hemorrhoids inside the rectal opening are usually painless, but often bleed. Straining to have a bowel movement can aggravate the problem. Other symptoms include increased moisture or itching around the rectum, or finding a small bulge that is very tender to the touch outside the rectum.

What is Fiber and why do we need it?

Easily explained, fiber is indigestible food particles that absorb water. When you eat foods high in fiber, your digestive system allows fiber particles to mix with your stool.

The added moisture lubricates the colon and makes bowel movements easier. Without fiber's lubricating qualities, bowel movements can require straining effort. That effort contributes to hemorrhoid problems.

All of these are common food items and fall into three main categories: Vegetables, Grains, and Fruits & Nuts. Including them in your daily diet will help maintain a healthy digestive system, decrease the likelihood of hemmorhoidal problems and may even assist in avoiding certain types of cancer.
